If you are looking for a fun activity to do this Fall, try going to the Celtic Hills Farm Corn Maze.
The owners of this agritourism attraction, Sara Franklin and Mike McCarron started the maze in 2015. Every year, with the help of a surveyer, they map out a new pattern for the maze over 16 acres of land.
This year’s theme: the A-Maze-ing Race!
Location: St-Andrews, 2.5km off Highway 316 (turn onto Highway 316 at Mother Webbs, drive in 2.5km). The maze is on the right.
Hours of operation: Weekends from 10:00am to 6:00pm.
Cost: $6 per person or $20 for a family (cash only).
Once you arrive you will be greeted by Sara and given instructions, handed a map, a series of questions.
The maze has 13 stations. Each stations shows the location of the next station and contains information on a given province (agriculture, mining, etc.). Once in the maze, your goal will be to locate Station 1, complete the challenge (answer a trivia question, word scramble or multiple choice) and then move on to the next station.
A mini-maze is also available at the beginning of the main maze, which is excellent for younger children!
If you chose to complete the entire maze, make sure you follow the map if you want to exit within the hour. However, if you get lost, no worries… the corn maze rows are straight and the highway is visible from all angles of the maze. Simply make your way towards the road, it will lead you to the maze’s perimeter where you can walk back to the entrance/exit.
We we’re up for the challenge, and decided to do the entire maze, along with our dog.
The kids had a blast! Not only did they have fun, but they also learned a lot about our provinces.
So, don’t miss this opportunity! The maze will be open until the end of October.
A night maze event was also held last year, and with enough interest from maze goers, another night maze will be planned for this year. For this, you will need to bring your own flashlights, since the main entrance will be the only area lit. Make sure to check their Facebook page for event details!
A few suggestions:
- On hot days, bring water, a hat and sun screen (water and snacks are also sold at the entrance)
- If it rained the day before, make sure you bring rubber boots.
- Celtic Hills Farm is a dog friendly place. If you decide to bring your dog, make sure they are on a leash (and bring doggy bags).
- Bring a packed lunch to enjoy at the end of your challenge, picnic table are available at the entrance.
