The Antigonish SPCA is in urgent need of foster homes for kittens. Our current foster homes are full, but we need to be able to take in more kittens. As it is kitten season, we are getting calls on a regular basis about kittens in need. Do you have a spare room you are able to share with some kittens for 4-8 weeks? Being a foster is a wonderful and rewarding experience. We supply everything, so it doesn’t cost you anything. All we ask from you is to bring them in for their check-ups. In return you get all the fun that kittens bring!

- Must be over 18 years of age
- Your own animals need to be up to date with their vaccinations
- Need to have consent from your Landlord (if you rent)
- Need support of all other household members involved.
- Must have time each day to care for your fosters – the time needed depends on the individual situation, we can customize the foster animal you take home to what works best for your lifestyle and schedule.
- Need a room to isolate the foster animal(s) from other household pets
- Need reliable access to transportation for picking up/dropping off fosters and visits to our Vet (when necessary) or shelter for supplies.
Throughout the year, some of the animals that come to the Nova Scotia SPCA need temporary homes – and that’s where we need your help.
Yes, you can foster even if you are only available for a short time – or are not sure how to care for kittens – we can teach you!
Many of the animals that come into our branch shelters need a little extra TLC before finding their new forever home or are too young to be ready for adoption. Foster Parents provide a temporary home for these animals as they recover from surgery or illness, or simply put on a little more weight before being spayed or neutered.
- Every animal that you foster is given a second chance at life – and the more animals you foster, the more lives you help save.
- Fostering can be a great way to try having an animal in your life, before making a lifelong commitment
- First time Foster Parents receive training, and our friendly Foster Team are just a phone call away
- We provide any medical care required
- We supply all food, bedding, litter trays and everything else to help the animals have a comfortable stay in your home
- The average length of stay is 3-6 weeks for cats, and 6 weeks for dogs
These little friends are looking for their furever homes. Porcha and Mustang are sister and brother. Also in their litter are Mercedes (adopted), and Bentley. This little kitten gang were surrendered to us when they were found in a cemetery in St. Andrews in early June. Since being found, they have all stuck together in the care of one of our lovely fosters. They are all lovely, and affectionate kittens. Still available are Porcha, Bentley, and Mustang. 
Porcha is a female grey tabby approximately 12-14 weeks old. Porcha is a sweet, friendly kitten who is looking for her forever home. Porcha loves to play and cuddle. 
Mustang is a black, domestic short haired , male kitten. Mustang is approximately 12-14 weeks old. He is vaccinated, tested for feline leukemia, neutered, micro-chipped and treated for parasites. Mustang is a sweet kitten who loves to play and snuggle. 
Bentley is a male black and white domestic short haired tuxedo kitten. Bentley is approximately 12-14 weeks old. Loves to play and snuggle. Bentley is neutered, micro chipped, vaccinated, tested for feline leukemia and treated for parasites. Bentley is looking for his forever home.

Here are a few SPCA adoptable cats looking for a home.
Meet Lily. She is a beautiful Domestic Short Hair approximately 1 year old. Her coat is a striking tortoiseshell pattern of orange and black. She is very lovable girl ready for a permanent home. She can be very vocal which is interesting. She is currently being fostered in a home with a dog and they are fine together as long as she isn’t startled by her. Not really a snuggler but will initiate contact on her terms.
This strikingly handsome fellow is Gucci! He has just had his first birthday. His beautiful black coat is long and shiny and shows off his snow-white whiskers perfectly!
Gucci has had all vet work done and his greatest desire is to have a new permanent home filled with lots of attention.
Daisy is a sweet and affectionate girl. She is a muted calico between one and two years old and so ready for her forever home. She loves to be patted and can play up a storm! Boxes are her favourites. Is your home the right one for Daisy?

As we say goodbye to 2016, I am reminded what an amazing year it was and how lucky I am to find my fur-ever home.

I was found on a heated mat and taken in out of the cold.
The SPCA accepted me and the volunteers were amazing.

The lady that found me on her step adopted me. At first her allergies were bad, but she said I was great company.
She is feeling much better now that I have a robotic litter box so she does not have to deal with the litter that makes her sick.

I had my first birthday.
I am also very honoured to have been picked for the SPCA calendar. All my friends and family are getting calendars for Christmas.
My mommy is a big hockey fan. So we wear our Oilers jerseys and watch hockey together. Most times I fall asleep.
Don’t be fooled by this picture. I am not fat just real fluffy especially after I get brushed. Mommy entered this photo in a contest, the Oilers have Pet of the month. If I get picked they donate money to the SPCA. Paws crossed I hope I get picked.
As the sign says “The Good Life” is what I have in my fur ever home.
My wish for 2017 is Peace Love and Happiness to all the wonderful volunteers that make sure every animal gets a fur-ever home.

Bear is a Husky/Lab mix with perhaps a bit of German Shepherd in there somewhere. He is a super friendly fellow who loves children and adults, cats and other dogs (of course he likes to be introduced slowly at first).
He loves long walks, playing or just hanging out at your side.
What he likes best of all (if he can’t be with you) when he is left home, is to be able to watch through the window for your return, when you will be greeted with joy. A nice, big, raw bone to chew on when you are gone would be an added bonus!!
Bear is quite strong on leash but his foster mom has been doing a terrific job teaching him to know better. He really is just eager to see what lies ahead!
Although Bear is thought to be ten years old, his activity and condition are of a much younger dog and he is looking for a loving permanent home to “hang his hat”.
Bear is neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, treated for parasites and has a clean bill of health from our SPCA veterinarian. Bear also comes with a free six week trial of pet insurance courtesy of Petsecure™. His adoption fee is $260.00.

Bonnie really loves people and is eagerly awaiting a family to be a part of forever. She is an easy-going and calm cat. Bonnie seeks out cuddles and attention. Her shiny black fur glistens when she is soaking up the sun in her favourite chair. She knows she will fit into a loving home quickly.
