We’ve been wanting to visit the Tall Ships for quite a while now. Luckily this summer, more than 40 Tall Ships sailed into Canadian waters to honour Canada on its 150th anniversary. Three of these vessels sailed to the Port Hawkesbury waterfront, so we were finally able to admire them up close.

It was such a wonderful experience. Although the weather was dreary and it rained most of the day, the kids really enjoyed going on the ships, meeting the crew members and taking lots of pictures.

We started our tour on the When and If.

Quite the story behind this Tall Ship. General Patton commissioned F.F Pendleton to build the ship in 1939 with the intention of sailing her around the world.

“When the war is over, and If I live through it, Bea and I are going to sail her around the world.”
-General George S. Patton

Unfortunately, the General was not able to achieve his goal. However, after switching owners several times, being damaged by a storm, then rebuilt, and later restored, this historic vessel is now on the path to fulfill her destiny thanks to a very enthusiastic and determined crew.

The next tall ship we boarded was the Spirit of South Carolina.

This schooner contained beautiful wood craftsmanship and its crew members were delightful.

Last, but not least, we toured the Tree of Life, which has circled the globe twice!

We really enjoyed visiting the three majestic ships  🙂

And although these vessels are no longer docked in Port Hawkesbury, other Tall Ships will remain in various ports of the Atlantic, including Nova Scotia, throughout the month of August.

So, don’t miss this great opportunity. Your kids will love the tours.
